We investigate the genesis of a subsurface frontal meander of the NBUC, centred at about 4°S, 36.5°W, called the Potiguar Eddy (PE). The Feature Models (FMs) of NBUC and DWBC are first developed from observed velocity data.

We investigate the influence of a standing meander south of Australia on air-sea heat fluxes, upper ocean structure, and subduction. The standing meander induces trough-to-crest variations in surface heat flux, mixed layer depth (MLD), wind stress curl, vertical velocity, and subduction.

This lecture contains the derivations and steps to estimate Water Mass Subduction in an Eddying Ocean (Sections 2 and 3 in Marshall, 1997). I also prepared a general introduction to subduction based on Stommel (1979) and Cushman-Roisin (1987) before exploring the eddy-induced subduction (see my notes here).
